(Nanuet, NY – October 22, 2018) Nationally-acclaimed architectural glass design and installation firm, W&W Glass, LLC, shared two distinct national honors for projects the company helped create this past year. The 2018 Bloomberg Center Higher Education Research Award of Merit recognized Cornell Tech’s Bloomberg Center which is a four-story, 150,000 square foot academic building located on the University’s 12-acre campus on Roosevelt Island. The superstructure is steel framed with polished concrete decks, and its facade is a custom-unitized metal panel and glass wall system, featuring a four-story, elliptical, glass-enclosed staircase. W&W Glass worked with designers Morphosis to achieve the goal of becoming a net zero building.
The Bloomberg Center now forms the heart of the new Cornell Tech campus bridging academia and industry while pioneering new standards in environmental sustainability through state-of-the-art design. W&W Glass worked closely with Barr & Barr Contractors on a unitized curtain wall which is the major feature of the building. The wall is an expansive photovoltaic canopy, with a low and narrow profile that frames views across the island. One of the building’s most distinctive features is its facade, optimized to balance transparency—maximizing daylighting and exterior views, and opacity—maximizing insulation and reducing thermal bridging. Designed as a rain screen system, the outermost layer of the facade is composed of aluminum panels surfaced in an iridescent, PPG polymer coating. The aluminum panels register a continuous image that merges the river-view scenery from Cornell Tech’s Roosevelt Island location and Cornell University’s idyllic campus in Ithaca, New York.
Also being recognized as one of the best architecture projects for 2018 is the Stony Brook Hospital – MART addition which won the Excellence in Safety Award of Merit for 2018. The overall project included construction of Stony Brook Hospital’s 245,000 square foot Medical and Research Translation—or MART—building and a 225,000 square foot hospital pavilion. All totaled, the structure required 3 million hours to complete with an impeccable safety record. W&W Glass was the official installer of the unitized Sotawall® custom curtain wall system with custom vertical line ceramic frit silk-screen patterns on insulating glass units with horizontal metal reveals. The team achieved a culture of safety day-by-day that resulted in an incredible safety record which was even more remarkable considering significant safety exposures daily.
“We are so gratified at being a part of these 2018 award-winning projects that received national recognition for excellence. We pride ourselves in doing great quality work every time for our clients,” said Michael Haber, Managing Partner. “Both of these projects took an extraordinary amount of time and collaboration to give the owners the projects they envisioned. To be recognized as one of the best for this year is just an added bonus.”
The four-story Bloomberg Center, 160,000-square-foot academic building is named in honor of Emma and Georgina Bloomberg in recognition of a $100-million gift from Michael Bloomberg, who was responsible for bringing Cornell Tech to New York City while serving as the city’s 108th Mayor. General contractor EW Howell Construction Group’s Superintendent Harry Hansen was responsible for ensuring safety on the Stony Brook Hospital jobsite at all times. E.W. Howell’s in-house safety committee did a walk-through of the job and made recommendations—an action not required by the owner, but rather a proactive step taken by the firm’s safety director.
